ABOUT PACEMAKERS
A pacemaker is a small, half-dollar-sized device placed under the skin near your heart to help control your heartbeat. A pacemaker is implanted as part of "cardiac resynchronization therapy." People may need a pacemaker for a variety of reasons — mostly due to arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeat).
Normal aging or previous heart muscle damage from heart attacks may disrupt your heart rate, making it beat too slowly. Some medications and genetic conditions can also affect your heart rate. Regardless of the underlying cause of an abnormal heart rate, a pacemaker may fix it.
A pacemaker can often be implanted in your chest with minor surgery. You may need to take some precautions in your daily life after your pacemaker is installed.
If you have an implanted cardiac device, please note that your device check will not be scheduled on the same day as your office visit.
To arrange your device check appointment, please contact our Device Clinic Scheduler at 806-803-9836. When calling, have the manufacturer of your device readily available to help expedite the scheduling process.
